I awoke to the sound of my cell phone ringing. Even in the dead of sleep I could recognize that sound. My eyes fluttered open and my gaze immediately fell on the comforting gray walls and soft, leather chair. I recognized Jack’s bedroom and remembered that I was not at home.

The phone rang over and over but I knew that it was downstairs on the kitchen counter. I wasn’t about to jump out of bed to answer it. The phone quieted and I felt movement beside me. I rolled over and saw that Jack was still in bed with me, lying chest-down with his head resting on his hand. I blinked my eyes and yawned, stretching at the same time. I felt tremendously better. The nap and Tylenol had really helped.

I rolled onto my side, eyeing Jack, and wondered how long he had been there. At some point, he had removed his shirt and had fallen asleep, disregarding the fact that I was sick and quite possibly contaminating the entire bed. He didn’t even stir and I slowly began to realize that he probably hadn’t slept in over 24 hours. I stared shamelessly, enjoying every moment of uninterrupted observation - those perfect features, that dark hair, his entire body…it was almost more than I could stand. I reached out and gently touched his arm, marveling at the perfection of his skin. There wasn’t a blemish, a mole, a scar, nothing – until you got to his back. It seemed to be the only part of his body that had taken some serious abuse. He had a large scar across his right shoulder blade, a massive one too, about six inches long and a ½ inch wide. It was almost a sacrilege having such a mark on that gorgeous body, as if some vandal had come along and intentionally damaged a beautiful piece of art. It was clearly the result of some horrific accident.

My eyes continued to wander, coming to rest on two more scars further down. One was a small section that looked like a bad burn but the second scar was much more disturbing to look at. It was on his right side, almost to his hip, and it was three slash marks, like… claw marks almost. I swallowed as I stared at them, their whitish stain left forever in Jack’s beautifully bronzed skin. Claw marks? What in the hell was he doing to get such an injury? Was it a dog attack?

I pulled my eyes away and ran my fingertip along the largest scar’s crooked path, coming to rest on Jack’s massive shoulder, and noticed that he was awake, watching me. I jerked my hand away as if caught in some criminal act.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered, feeling my face turn crimson.

“Don’t be,” he said quietly, “It felt nice.”

I watched as Jack slowly came to life, leaving the boundaries of sleep behind and rubbing his eyes with his hands. He glanced at his watch and then rolled onto his side so he was facing me.
